eMarketer just released a new report on the US blogging ecosystem. Called “The Blogosphere: A Mass Movement from Grass Roots”, here are the main highlights:
- “The number of people creating blogs in the US will reach over 35 million by 2012—roughly 16% of the Internet population.”
- “More than 145 million people—67% of the US Internet population—will be reading blogs at least once a month.”
- “US blog advertising will reach $746 million in 2012, up from $283 million in 2007.”
What it means: if anyone ever doubted blogging was going to become mass market phenomenon, this report definitely shows positive trends towards that. Lately, we’ve also seen investors throw money at blog ad networks, at blogging platforms and at blogging tool companies. The increasing use of blogging platforms as content management solutions by large media companies is also a major trend. Finally, the fact that blogging caters to niches increases the ad revenue potential (i.e. higher CPMs). This makes for a rich, vibrant and growing ecosystem.
The blogs that are important to people will always be successful. Companies hiring someone to write for them, without the passion or understanding of the conversational aspect will not get many eyeballs. Good news about the growth though, I am feeling massive!
