“Google becomes more local” from the Google Blog
We like to make search as easy as we can, so we’ve just finished the worldwide rollout of local search results on a map, which will now appear even when you don’t type in a location. When you search on Google, we will guess where you are and show results near you.
Mini-what it means: Google is now trying to auto-magically detect your location in your browser. A clear sign that the Web is becoming more and more local and that Google is preparing for the arrival of geo-location in browsers and mobile devices.
On the future of location, last I checked it’s also baked into Windows 7 – meaning that’s another datapoint around the importance of geo.
