Way back in June (I hadn’t seen it until today), Techcrunch covered in details the various geo-location technologies available through mobile devices. As the article says, “Being location aware is the single most important feature in a mobile device that otherwise suffers in comparison with desktop and laptop Internet devices – terrible screen size and resolution, poor battery life, slow connectivity and less than satisfying data input choices.”
The article covers the following technologies. More info on each of those can be found in the full article.
What it means: I’m late to this great blog post on Techcrunch but I believe it’s required reading for anyone in the local search industry. Location technologies currently serve as the backbone for relevant mobile proximity results and if you don’t understand the opportunities and challenges of each, you’re basically in the dark while building location-aware applications.
